İstem Saltık, founder and gemmologist

The house carries her name. Saltique is İstem Saltık, a gemmologist who buys at origin. That means getting on a plane, sitting at the trading table, and holding the stone in daylight before any money changes hands.

It is slower than buying from a catalogue and it is the only way to know what you are selling. A stone is judged on what it gives back to the eye, not on the paperwork that travels with it, and that judgement cannot be delegated.

What comes home is a small number of stones. Each one is set into a piece drawn around it, at a bench, by hand.

Every stone in this collection was held at origin before it was bought. The pit, the trading street, the cutter’s bench, the gem laboratory. The first entry of the Journal is that journey, photographed as it happened.

Bespoke

Begun at the deposit.

  1. Source

    The founder travels to the deposit. The stone is chosen by hand, turned in daylight, and bought at origin.

  2. Design

    The setting is drawn around the stone, never the stone fitted into a setting that already existed.

  3. Set

    Bench work in the workshop. Every prong is cut for that stone alone, so the seat is exact.

  4. Deliver

    The piece arrives with its report and its provenance. What it is, and where it came from.
